Amsterdam Light Festival is the highlight of the dark winter months in the capital of The Netherlands. To make the event experience as user-friendly as possible, we developed a native app. The app is built sustainably, ensuring it can be used for many years to come. The art of a compact app
The Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual event. During the festival, twenty to thirty unique light artworks can be found throughout the city, which can be viewed via a route. In previous editions, the route was only available for purchase through the website. Therefore, for the 2023 edition, we developed an app in collaboration with the festival. The goal was to create a seamless and user-friendly experience. To achieve this, we chose to develop the apps natively for Android and iOS, with payments that can be made easily and securely through the app.
Making the right choices, that's what we do
The app for the Amsterdam Light Festival is smaller than the apps we usually develop. Although building a native app takes more time, we were able to achieve this for the light festival. With strategic choices and a small team of senior engineers, we quickly created a user-friendly app. Apple and Google have already arranged many functionalities well within their platforms. By using these native components on iOS and Android, we received a lot for free. Another pragmatic choice was the CMS: Sanity.
The magic of the festival in the app
Festival visitors walk along the glowing creations or admire the stunning artworks from a boat ride. The app provides a handy route, detailed information about the artworks and exclusive background stories. Visitors stay up-to-date with the app and don't miss anything from the event. They can experience the magic of the festival before, during, and after their visit.
A small project made big
In 2023, the route map in the app performed just as well as in previous years via the website, but the user experience has significantly improved. Moreover, the app is fully optimized to be easily renewed each year. Visitors can enjoy an unforgettable experience in Amsterdam every year with an app that guides them along the way.
