The BAM Mark-app in the Apple Vision Pro

Using Apple Vision Pro in construction: together with BAM, we created a prototype in two weeks to digitally visualise 3D-models of construction projects.

3D Models on the Apple Vision Pro? The question was whether this was already possible. We have a method to answer this question: Jumpstarts. In one week, we build and test a working prototype to see if a concept is feasible. We did this with Royal BAM Group as well.

Jumpstart
Construction company BAM is always working to make operations and workflows more efficient. We've previously collaborated on an AI object detection tool. Another challenge is to get a better view of construction projects in advance through 3D models. For example, we created an iPhone application that visualises where holes can be drilled in the wall without hitting pipes. This augmented reality prototype, called the Mark app, was developed during an initial Jumpstart. However, this prototype was not entirely accurate. The question remained: how can BAM truly view the models in 3D?

Apple Vision Pro
In 2024, the Apple Vision Pro was launched. It turned out to be the perfect match for viewing 3D models, as the Mark app already runs on iOS. The challenge was to make BAM's internal 3D files technically compatible with the Apple Vision Pro and to create a pleasant UX. In a short time, we developed a prototype so that visionOS can display BAM's 3D objects through the headset.

A Peek Inside
The Apple Vision Pro is a mixed reality VR headset. This means the headset adds digital elements to the real world. By using ARKit and RealityKit, the files can be easily transferred to Apple's visionOS. With the Apple Vision Pro, BAM employees can place a model of a house in the real world and walk through it virtually, as if they are actually in the space. For example, this AR technology also allows for projecting a 3D model of an existing attic, including new pipes, into the real world. Other relevant use cases include walking through a yet-to-be-built new house in 3D, virtually scaffolding a building, spotting errors in an installation drawing more quickly, or displaying a construction project on a table.

Faster renovations
This application is not only useful for visualising new homes but can also save time in renovation projects. For example, an existing space like an attic can be scanned with an iPhone. A 3D model of the space is then created and displayed in the Apple Vision Pro. New equipment, such as a heat pump, can subsequently be placed in the model. This provides a clear view of both the current and future situation, allowing the renovation to start more quickly.

With this innovative project, we have taken a glimpse into the future together with BAM.
